EXCESS FLOW VALVES
Customer notification as required by 49 C.F.R. part
192.383
WHAT IS AN EXCESS FLOW VALVE?
An excess flow valve restricts the flow of gas by closing automatically if a
service line breaks. It does not protect against slow leaks such as those caused
by corrosion, loose fittings or leaks beyond the meter assembly (house piping).
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR AN EXCESS FLOW VALVE?
Any single residence service line operating continuously throughout the year at
a pressure not less than 10 psig is eligible for an excess flow valve. In
addition, the composition of locally produced natural gas may prevent the
installation of valves to certain customers. Notification of eligibility occurs
at the establishment of service or during the replacement of a service line. The
definition of a replaced service line is a natural gas service line where the
fitting that connects the service line to the main is replaced or the piping
connected to this fitting is replaced.
WHO PAYS FOR THE COSTS OF INSTALLATION?
The customer bears all costs associated with installation. In addition, the
customer bears all costs for maintaining and replacing the Excess Flow Valve and
will be charged to the customer's account. The current cost of a flow valve is
$??.?? and the cost of installation is $??.?? for a total of $??.?? if performed
during the installation or replacement of a service line.
